kangra is a charming town located 17 km from Dharamshala. The kangra valley is one of the prettiest valleys in Himachal. Brimming with lush green terraces and orchar, kangra town overlooks a gushing stream known as Banganga. Once the ancient capital of a powerfull hill state, kangra was known for its magnificent temples and as a thriving centre for arts, notably the exquisite pahari style of miniature painting that flourished during the reign ogf Raja Sansar Chand (1775-1823).
At kangra, a fort and some temples remain, as a reminder of kangra glorious post. In the town is the beautiful temple of Bajreshwari Devi. It was renowned for its legendary wealth and craftsmanship. invaders from the north systematically attacked this temple and Mohammed Ghajni looted a kings ransom in gold, silver and jewels in 1009. Destroyed completely in 1905 by an earthquacke, the temple was rebuilt in 1920. It continues to be a busy place of pilgrimage.
Stalls outside the temple provide everything pilgrims may need and also sell brass puja utensils, sacred threads, flags and images of the goddess. The kangra valley is famous the world over for its astounding beauty. It is dotted with several anciant shrines, making it a destination hard to resist.
Kangra Fort The historical kangra fort located at old kangra is 3 km from kangra town. The view of gushing streams of Banganga and Manjhi rivulets from the fort is charming. The kangra fort was the seat of power of the Katoch Kings. It was the ancient capital of the katoch kingdom and symbol of power in the punjab hill states. The fort of nagarkot stands as a mute witness to the revages of conquerors from Mahmud of Ghazni to the emperor jhsngir and the disastrous earthquake of 1905.
Emperor Akbar made many attempts to capture this fort but could not succeed. One can enter the fort by a narrow path. It was protected by a number of gates named after its winners like Jahangir, Ranjit Singh and the British. At the top of the fort, there was the place of the katoch kings. Inthe courtyard there are two temples. One is of Lakshmi Narain and the other of Ambika Devi, the family goddess of the Katoch Kings. The fort remained neglected during the British period but now the archaeologicalsurvey of india maintains it. The fort remains an attraction round the year.
